Stafford Challenge Cup champions FC Bengaluru United went down 2-1 to Bengaluru FC in their first game of the HERO 2nd Division, I League qualifiers, at the Bangalore Football Stadium. Despite losing the game 2-1, the young FCBU team showed tremendous zeal on the offensive front and would be disappointed to have not converted their opportunities.

The game started at a fast pace with both teams looking to assert themselves on the pitch. The first half witnessed end-to-end action – Bengaluru FC were reduced to 10 men after their goalkeeper was sent off following a skirmish in the box. Despite the setback, Bengaluru FC were quick to react and scored soon after the red card. A quick breakaway, following a free kick against Bengaluru FC, saw Captain Harmanpreet link up with Leone, who swatted it home.

In the second half, FCBU came out with renewed vigour to try and take control of the game. They dominated possession and created multiple chances, but were unable to find the equaliser. In the 69th minute, Bengaluru FC scored again, following a successful penalty conversion by Namgyal Bhutia, giving them a two-goal lead.  Despite the setback, FCBU continued to press hard and soon enough were awarded a penalty. Irfan Yadwad stepped up for his team and converted it with composure. The score now stood at 2-1 with FCBU looking to equalize. The team continued to create chances and kept Bengaluru FC under pressure, but unfortunately, they were unable to score another goal.

The hard-fought game between the two sides is indicative of the competitive action that will follow in the HERO 2nd Division I-League qualifiers. FC Bengaluru United will take on RKMFC in their next game on the 18th of March, where they will be keen to get back to winning ways.
